How To Make the Perfect Smoothie Bowl With Your Vitamix

Hi Cook Culture, I’m Michael Steele, co-founder of The Good Stuff, a Vancouver-based company that delivers “ready-to-blend” smoothies – frozen whole food ingredients in perfect smoothie recipes.

Ah, the smoothie bowl. The most Instagrammable of dishes, a good smoothie bowl is equal parts healthy, delicious, and beautiful. If you’ve recently chosen a Vitamix, it’s also a great way to get more use out of your new machine.

Smoothie bowls are slightly more complicated to make than a regular smoothie, however. With a little precision and technique, you can easily make a fun and creative smoothie bowl.

So I’m here to give you tips for making smoothie bowls specifically for Vitamix users, as well as share a couple of my favourite recipes!

Smoothie Bowl Steps for Vitamix Owners

  1. Add all smoothie base ingredients, including liquid, into the blender
  2. Start on Variable 1, or the low end of the knob (depending on your model), blend for 20 seconds
  3. Slowly increase to Variable 5, or midway on the knob, and blend for another 20 seconds
  4. Use the tamper to push any ingredients down that aren’t blending. 60 seconds or as needed.
  5. Increase to Variable 8, or high on the knob, and blend for another 30 seconds.
  6. Pour into bowl, add toppings of choice, and enjoy!

The final texture should be quite thick, and you may even need a spoon to get the base totally out of the blender. That’s totally normal.

Other smoothie bowl tips:

  • Use frozen ingredients when possible to allow for a thicker texture with less liquid.
  • Find the perfect bowl. You want one that is wide enough to hold your toppings, and thick enough that the smoothie doesn’t quickly melt. I like the Kinto Remix Don Bowl.
  • Prep toppings beforehand. If a smoothie bowl sits too long it will begin to separate and melt. If you prep before you blend, you can put them on right away and get right to eating.
