Chef Matt Garvey

Born and raised in Victoria BC, Matt Garvey’s family has always made eating and sharing food a top priority. He carried this with him as he began his culinary career working in restaurants at age 16, eventually beginning a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, at UVic. Realizing that he genuinely enjoyed cooking, he left school and committed himself wholeheartedly to the world of food. He began his apprenticeship, at the Victoria Fairmont Empress, before moving to Vancouver, in 2009, to complete his Culinary Arts Diploma, at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.

While in Vancouver, he worked and staged at several restaurants including West, C, and the Pear Tree before deciding to experience what the rest of the world and country had to offer. He ate his way through Europe, Asia, Central and South America, eventually settling in Toronto, in 2012. In Ontario, he continued refining his own style of food, working at Canoe, Fairmont Royal York and Friday Harbour Resort, on Lake Simcoe. Here, he was able to connect with the local farmers and producers to create a food program that epitomized his love for local, seasonal farm-to-table eating.

Having recently moved back to Victoria, Matt has realized he truly enjoys sharing the knowledge of how to cook simple, delicious food. “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Matt believes this proverb is also true for cooking and he knows that sharing a meal, with loved ones, is hard to beat!
